In 1952 the New Musical Express came up with an idea, staging a weekly music chart, chronicling the best selling UK releases and placing them in order from lowest to highest, what we commonly know today as the UK top 40. Essentially a simple idea that took off in a big way and still continues to be the gauge of success in the modern music industry.
Al Martino began this trend in 1952 by reaching the top spot for the very first time with his single ‘Here In My Heart’, you can hear music from the man himself on the Nostalgia Music Catalogue.
BBC Four are delving into the history of the UK pop chart in ‘Pop Charts Britannia: 60 Years of the Top 10’ on Saturday 26th at 10.55pm. A must see for all music lovers and those with a passion for musical history.
