ABOUT

The Commodores started life when the founding members met as freshmen at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama. The band first caught the eye of the public opening for The Jackson 5 while on tour and were promptly signed to Motown in 1972. Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s The Commodores released a string of hits including Three Times a Lady which hit number one in the US and UK charts in 1978. Although the band is remembered often for their ballads, they predominantly released funky music heard on dance floors across the US.

Funk
Inspired by jazz, soul music and R&B, funk emphasised a strong rhythmic beat over the song’s melody. James Brown is often quoted as the founding father of funk but by the 1970s the genre had made it into the mainstream, receiving radio time. Funk can still be heard in today’s music where it is often sampled in hip-hop and house records.

Rise Up

This track was first released as a single in 1969 with a cover of Alvin Cash’s Keep on Dancing on the B-side.
