About The Goons
This band of comedians was ably led by Spike Milligan, with comic assistance from superlative British comedian-actors Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. They wrote and broadcasted in the 1950s, as the direct forerunner to the Monty Python troupe – some of the first ‘Oxbridge’ comedians to make it big in popular entertainment.
About the sketches
These sketches initiated the tradition of ‘surrealist’ comedy built on non politically-correct material – a trademark of subversive humour at the time which responds to then-current social attitudes. Despite focusing on British audiences (their most popular support), They were broadcast to a huge audience in Britain and overseas.
