About Jimmy Shand
Jimmy Shand was a hugely successful Scottish musician who played traditional Scottish dance music on the accordion. Although the accordion wasn’t the most glamorous of instruments, I could be argued that Shand was one of the first rock stars playing Inverness one night, London the next night and driving his van back, at breakneck speed, to bed in Dundee. He also took his trademark bald head, Buddy Holly specs and full kilted regalia, Scottish reels, jigs and strathspeys to North America, Australia and New Zealand, including Carnegie Hall in New York. All these endeavors lead Shand to be awarded an MBE in 1962.
