About Scott Joplin
Scott Joplin is ‘the’ Rag composer and one of the very first African-American composers. He wrote many different types of works, in a style which merges elements of European Classical traditions with native ‘American’ folk-musics representing the all-too-prevalent musical diaspora at that time.
About the music
These rags draw on many different musical traditions and demonstrates the close relationships between European musics and early American Jazz. The extent to which the slave trade impacted on this cultural crossover remains debatable.
