Born blind to working class parents in London, George Shearing began learning to play the piano at the age of three. He was forced to turn down several scholarship opportunities in order to earn a living performing in local pubs. Shearing began to make a name for himself with an all-blind band with which he made his first appearance on BBC radio. After moving to America in 1947 he gathered a quintet and released September in the Rain for MGM which was a commercial success. Shearing performed with his quintet until the group disbanded in 1978 by which time he had won many awards and collected a dedicated following..

Recognition
In 1999 on his 80th birthday he played to a sold out house in the Birmingham Symphony Hall and in 2007 he was named Sir George Shearing for his contribution to music.

My One and Only Love

Released on the album Blue Chiffon (1959), Shearing revisits the Frank Sinatra classic of 1953.
