RAY CHARLES – GEORGIA ON MY MIND
‘Georgia’ is always an arguable issue of was it a song dedicated to a state or a love song dedicated for a lady?
‘Georgia’ is always an arguable issue of was it a song dedicated to a state or a love song dedicated for a lady? But as in reality, two things connected Ray Charles in his life.
Born on September 23, 1930, Ray Charles Robinson lived a very poor life. Well, this may sound as sad as anything, but it was never an issue because his family never got to compare between the rich and the poor. Born only 30 miles away from Georgia State in Greenville, this true country boy loved nature and appreciated everything that surrounded him.
Learning local roads he could then follow them by heart. His interest and passion for music was born within himself and ran in his blood like a part of him. To create and be surrounded by music was one of his daily needs and desires. Everything created and made a sound that could be understood and followed as music. One person that influenced and inspired Ray Charles the most to play was a simple and honest man – Mr. Wylie Pit who lived just down the road. Red Wing Cafe and a general store that was run by him and his wife Georgia had one thing that no other place did – a piano. Jazz and boogie-woogie was introduced and imprinted in his blood. As young as age 3 he has a chance to play and fool around with piano chords in a way to create a sound of the feeling.
Another magic tool of music was a jukebox. Oh, sure a boy who had a passion of music had a chance to listen to a boogie-woogie as of Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, and Albert Ammon’s. Country Blues was popular in the Deep South too as: Tampa Red, Blind Boy Philips and Washboard S.
