Hillsborough report causes Singles chart surprise

Singles chart surprise following Hillsborough report

Since news on the Hillsborough Incident was released, the music charts has had a surprising guest in the ranks. Liverpool FC’s unofficial anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” sung by Gerry and the Pacemakers has entered the charts at no.12 in a week which was initially expected to be influenced by the announcement of the Mercury Music Prize shortlist.

An online campaign started by Liverpool MP, Steve Rotheram, with backing of Liverpool FC fans and supporters of the families of victims of the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy, has influenced the sales leading to the chart entry.

Speaking of the unforeseen re-interest in Gerry and the Pacemakers’ cover of the popular Rogers & Hammerstein song, signer Gerry Marsden, a supporter of the YNWAno.1 campaign has said any money received through royalties from the track will be donated to Hillsborough charities.

On reaction to the campaigns success, Rotheram tweeted: “People have asked what they can do now. If you download ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, it will send a message to the rest of the country.”
