Airing on BBC Four at 9pm, on Friday 10th May is the documentary ‘Queens of Jazz: The Joy and Pain of the Jazz Divas.’ Celebrating some of the greatest female jazz singers of the 20th century, this 60 minute feature according to the BBC, “takes an unflinching and revealing look at what it actually took to be a jazz diva during a turbulent time in America’s social history.” The programme illustrates the strife of a jazz diva’s journey and the obstacles they overcame to achieve their success, which always came at a cost. In doing so, it takes a look at the lives and careers of six singers – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone and Annie Ross.
We also hear from those who knew these jazz icons personally and professionally, alongside contemporary singers who have sought inspiration from them. Contributors include Lisa Stansfield, Melody Gardot, Diana Krall, Madeleine Peyroux, Claire Martin, Anita Wardell, Barb Jungr, Carleen Anderson, Tina May, Gregory Porter among others.
