About the music
These songs are written in a way so as to evoke late 1920s and early 1930s Weimar Germany – characterised by a Kurt Weill-esque pitband orchestration which features clarinets and ‘trap’ drumkit setups like the musical Chicago. There is a pervasive sense of black comic irony throughout, particularly prominent in the songs ‘If You Could See Her’ and ‘Tomorrow Belongs To Me’.
About the songwriters
Kander and Ebb reside in the pantheon of great American musical composers. Their most famous musicals are Chicago, Caberet, Zorba and Fosse – all of which showcase their ‘proto-jazz’ sound and pay a loving tribute to legendary choreographer Bob Fosse.
