Duke Ellington
Born in Washington D.C in 1899, Duke Ellington was an avid pianist, composer and band leader right up until his death in 1974. As well as innovatively revitalising various elements of twentieth century American Music, he began writing music such as the three – minute song and the romantic ballad which would become perhaps his greatest legacy.
