About the artist
Illinois Jacquet is as much of a saxophone colossus as Sonny Rollins and Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker. He proved how the tenor saxophone could help define the emergent R&B and soul languages just as it had done bop and big band swing. His solo on ‘Flying Home’ is hailed as the very first R&B saxophone solo, paving the way for future greats including Alvin ‘Red’ Tyler who worked with the great Little Richard.
