Motown years & hits
She became the first Motown superstar, thanks to a several hit songs composed mainly by Smokey Robinson (founder and front man of the popular vocal group The Miracles, obviously signed with Motown as well) such as “Two Lovers” and the Grammy-nominated “You Beat Me to the Punch”. She was known as “The Queen of Motown”, but she left the company in 1964, at the higher pitch of her fame.

My Guy
“My Guy” was a number-one hit recorded by Mary Wells and released by Motown in 1964. It was written and also produced by Smokey Robinson.
It was the first huge Wells’ hit and has allowed her to reached the top of the Billboard pop singles chart. Excluding some duets with Marvin Gaye, My Guy was the last Wells’ single for the Motown that she left at the age of 21. Aftere moving from Motown she signed with 20th Century Fox, but the best part of her career and her higher popularity period were behind her shoulders.
In the United Kingdom, “My Guy” peaked at number five in June 1964.
