Did you know that Shearing was born blind and into a working class family. However, this didn’t stop him and he began to learn piano formally at just 3 years old. He even remarked in 2007, when he was knighted. “So, the poor, blind kid from Battersea became Sir George Shearing. Now that’s a fairy tale come true.”

The George Shearing Quintet was formed in 1949 and disbanded in 1978. They were hugely up until their break up, selling over 900,000 copies of one single alone!
