About the songs
These songs were hugely popular in the inter-war decade and have been immortalised over the airwaves, as well as small and silver screen.
About the artists
Al Jolson began in jazz and blues but moved into the popular music sphere, where there was an increasing amount of money to be made. The same goes for most of the other artists on this list who began in ‘minority’ musical languages but changed their sound to suit the nascent (and financially rewarding) popular music market. Eventually many of these artists crossed even further into the domain of movies, which promised even greater acclaim during their golden years.
